FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Do I get a free trial?

Yes! All new students get a free, no obligation, 10-Day Trial. We will track your attendance as if you were an enrolled student, and you can attend as many classes as you like within those 10 consecutive calendar days.

What should I wear?

For your 10-day trial you will be provided a loaner uniform. A t-shirt/rash guard should be worn under the gi jacket. For Women Empowered, it's suggested to wear comfortable clothing you can workout in: a t-shirt and sweatpants/leggings are perfect, shirts should cover your shoulders and belly, and please no shorts.

Youth: Clean, white gi (grappling kimono). Youth students will be provided with a uniform for the trial period.

Gracie Combatives: Clean, white gi (grappling kimono). Students who train frequently should purchase a second gi to make sure you always have a clean gi for class.

Master Cycle Class:

GiClean, white gi & mouth guard. Master Cycle students should have at least two gis, and should wear protective equipment while sparring.

No-Gi and Street Sparring Class - Rash guard, spats, gi pants, and/or training shorts. Mouthguard and protective equipment are recommended.

Do I need to be in shape to learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?

Our beginner classes are designed so that any person regardless of age, athletic ability, or level of physical fitness can participate in the class. It is always better to start learning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and then get in shape so your body can develop the muscle memory required to perform the techniques in a real situation.

How long are classes?

Each class is approximately 1 hour long. The Master Cycle class is approximately 1 hour of instruction with an additional 30 minutes of reflex develpment and rolling after.

Do you let new students spar?

We do not let new students spar until they show a level of proficiency that will allow them to spar constructively and safely. This is to help prevent accidental injury.

Do I have to spar?

We will never force you to do anything you are uncomfortable with or feel unready to do.

Do I need martial arts experience to learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?

Our beginner classes are designed specifically for students with no experience in any martial art.

Do I have to compete in tournaments?

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a street self-defense martial art, students are not required or expected to compete, and will get promoted regardless of participating in competition.

Will I get hurt?

Our classes are conducted in a safe manner and are structured to avoid all possibilities of injury. We have a mat system designed to help keep students safe while training. Like any physical activity there is always risk of injury, and we encourage students to see their physician to make sure they are healthy enough for physical activity before joining any of our programs.

Will I learn to actually defend myself?

Yes! Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has been tested and proven over the last century to be a complete system of self-defense.

If I am an adult, will I be in class with kids / If I am a kid, will I be in class with adults?

All our classes are age specific, you will only train with students of similar age and skill level.

Do I need a uniform?

You will be provided a loaner uniform during your trial period. A shirt/rash guard should be worn under the gi jacket.

Once you become a student, you will be expected to be in a clean, white gi (grappling kimono), which we have available for purchase at the academy. You can also purchase a gi on your own, but it must be white. For the No-gi Master Cycle class, students will be required to wear a rash guard, spats, gi pants, or training shorts. All students are expected to follow dress code guidelines so training can be done in a safe and hygienic manner.

Uniforms from other schools and non-Gracie uniforms are allowed, but are required to be white. Rentals are available at the dojo for a small fee.

Do you have parking?

Yes! The Academy has plenty of free onsite parking.
